[00:00:00] So you can have faith in God and not be close to him. [00:00:05] Faith that pleases God requires us to be close to him, not just know about him. And Enoch depicts this in Hebrews chapter 11. God doesn't design us to fit. He designs us to be impactful. [00:00:24] Welcome to the podcast today. I'm Ryan Robinson. We've been walking through Hebrews 11, which is also known as the hall of Fame faith, where one, the ingredients of faith are depicted. [00:00:36] And as we're going through each of the scriptures, we are also finding out certain characteristics that made themselves prevalent. This ingredient of faith and how it manifested in the lives of those who came before Jesus and those who are anchors of the faith, like Moses or Abraham. [00:00:59] And then we have some people like Noah, Enoch, and most people don't really know about Enoch. [00:01:07] It's kind of a one is a weird name. [00:01:10] But two, most people don't understand that there's only like maybe two or three verses in this original reference in book of Genesis about this man. So let me go ahead. I'm gonna read Hebrews chapter 11, verses 5 through 6, and I'm going to point us back to the book of Genesis to get some idea and context as to who Enoch was and why he was listed in the hall of Faith, even though he had two verses. All right, so Hebrews chapter 11, beginning at verse 5 says this. [00:01:47] By faith, Enoch was taken to heaven so that he would not see death. [00:01:54] He was not found because God took him away. [00:01:57] For before he was taken, he had this commendation that he pleased God. [00:02:04] And without faith, it is impossible to please God. For he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. [00:02:16] All right, there's some. There's a. It's loaded in that one. Okay, so we've got that. All right, now, where was Enoch originally referenced? And he's referenced in the Book of Genesis, chapter five. [00:02:33] And we're going to read that a little bit so we have an understanding as to why his name is important. So we're going to do Genesis, chapter five verses. We're going to start at verse 21 and go to 20. [00:02:46] Enoch lived 65 years and became the father of Methuselah. [00:02:52] Enoch walked with God after the birth of Methuselah for 300 and 300 and had other sons and daughters. [00:03:04] So all the days of Enoch were 365 days. [00:03:09] Here's the verse. [00:03:11] Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more because God took him. [00:03:20] And then it goes right Into Methuselah. [00:03:24] Okay. So I think it's important to get context for this because Enoch is one of the few people listed in the Bible as someone who was taken up by God, who did not see death. In this line of people, I think it's powerful to know that Enoch was a close who was in close proximity to God. So let's do this. [00:03:49] There are some key notes in here that we can break down in the scriptures here that says this. [00:03:55] Clearly God values closeness than knowledge of him. [00:04:02] Okay, why is that important? [00:04:05] Because faith requires us to be in close proximity to. [00:04:10] You have to communicate, you have to have a conversation, you have to one, have faith, but you also have to continue to seek and to find. [00:04:19] And when you don't have any foundational things, you have to build that, which means there is a proximity and a understanding of closeness. We'll utilize Peter jumping out or not jumping out, but getting out of the boat. Jesus said come. [00:04:38] Peter was also one of the 12 that spent a lot of time with Jesus. So when you have that level of closeness with someone, you're able to trust the words that they say. [00:04:54] And the goal is your faith actually empowers you and actually, for lack of a better word, implores you or makes you want to get to know God better. [00:05:11] Bible says faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Therefore, if you are really curious about building and you're building your faith, you need to get close to his Word. [00:05:22] So you learn things, you find, find things about him. And Enoch actually does this in the beginning and he points this out and honestly is really a foreshadowing that if you get close to God, God comes close to you. And just like he did, Jesus, his son, who is his closest, his, the thing that he loved the most, did not see death. [00:05:45] He thought he did, but on the third day, he rose. So you start seeing these comparisons in these shadows of Enoch, who live, who's close. Jesus, who was close to his father, stole away to even talk to him. When things got tough and just had quiet time in the morning with him, God took him, took his body. There's no evidence that Enoch was buried or died, right? [00:06:14] So Enoch's faith was so strong, it made God. [00:06:20] So let me say this again. [00:06:23] Enoch's faith made him so close to God that death could not touch him. [00:06:31] Think about that. [00:06:34] Are we as close to God that circumstances like a job loss, circumstances like being sick, Pick your issue. [00:06:48] Do you trust God? And are you so close to God that you believe God over what's happening. Not saying that God's going to fix it, because God's not just going to fix everything. His will is what his will is. [00:07:03] But do we trust him enough, do we have faith in him enough to believe that whatever he decides to to do trumps whatever I thought was best for me? [00:07:14] That's submission to the nth degree. And I know many of us have challenges with that, but God's God, and we have to believe that what he's doing and what he's allowing is best for us in this time period. [00:07:30] Okay, I'm gonna go back to. I want to say something on verse number. [00:07:39] It's part of number five. But it says before he was taken, he had this commendation that he pleased God. [00:07:50] That was it. [00:07:52] It's not what he built. [00:07:54] It's not what he did. It's not what he said. [00:07:57] It's not even what he left in the earth. [00:08:00] It's that he pleased God. [00:08:05] That's one of the most powerful verses there. [00:08:09] Who he walked with was his resume. He pleased God. [00:08:16] He didn't do anything else except believe in him. [00:08:20] And then verse chapter six. For without faith, it is impossible to please God. [00:08:26] For he who comes to God must believe that he exists and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. [00:08:33] The thing about faith is it is the gateway to intimacy, not just to a blessing. [00:08:40] Let me say that again. [00:08:42] Faith is the gateway to intimacy, not just a blessing. [00:08:48] Many of us misappropriate faith to a thing, an item. Do we have faith for? [00:08:58] Do you have faith for that God will do? [00:09:01] Do you have faith that God will have something for you? [00:09:06] Now, what God is looking for with faith is, do you have enough faith to draw close to me not just for what God has in his hand, but what God has for you when you draw close. [00:09:24] You know, when you're a kid, and if you have kids, it's always nice when your child comes to you just to hang out with you. They don't want anything. They kind of nestle up, they snuggle up. [00:09:40] And you just watching tv, you're watching for us. It's Spidey and his amazing friends. [00:09:48] There's no agenda. [00:09:50] You're just present. And when you draw close like that, you don't mind doing anything. [00:09:59] My daughter knows how to get me my son. [00:10:02] My daughter really knows how to get me my son. He's getting it. He's 2, but he's figuring it out. He knows how to get my wife. Real talk. [00:10:10] But it is this thing about Drawing close to someone that is like, I don't want what you do, I want who you are. [00:10:21] And then when you want who I am, you can get whatever I have. [00:10:27] That's what God really wants from us. [00:10:29] God's not a genie. [00:10:32] He definitely ain't a Santa Claus. [00:10:36] God is our heavenly Father. [00:10:41] So it always pleases God when we are pursuit of him consistently, not just what he brings us and not saying that God won't do it. [00:10:53] Now also, it says a lot of faith that if you ask him, you have enough faith to ask him to do something, which means you know he's capable of doing it right. So there's things that you do bring to him just like you would a parent. [00:11:07] But it is always better when you have drawn close first. [00:11:14] You spent time, you've invested, you have deposited moments of intimacy, conversation, watching shows, laughter, and all the things that make you draw close to someone. And then you make a request and you're like, hey, there's something I really want. [00:11:34] Is that something I really. Can I have? [00:11:37] Mommy, can I have? [00:11:39] And then you're like, since you already, you know, since we hung out already, yeah, I'll do some. I'll do something. I'll get you the Starbucks sandwich. I'll get you a cake pop. I'll. I'll get you whatever you want if it doesn't make sense. [00:11:54] But love doesn't make sense. We don't know the depths of love that we have if we can't really put a name or number to how deep our love is for our children, how much deeper is God for us? [00:12:06] And all he wants is us to draw close to Him. [00:12:11] So I want you to do a couple of things here. I want you, and this is a coaching opportunity. I want you to favor the walk instead of the watch. [00:12:23] So walk with God over watching God. Many of us like to admire God from afar for the things that he has done. That's praising God, that is letting God know, these are the things that you've done. I've seen you do it. I want you to do it again. That's praise. But worship, when it gets down to it, that's where many people, few people go into, is worshiping God and who he is, that he's good, that he's merciful, that He, He. He is a God who is. Knows the end from the beginning. His majesty is bigger than the universe, the cosmos, the grass of the, of the, of the earth literally grow at his command. [00:13:09] He put the stars in the sky and made designs just for us. [00:13:15] He placed water and all the resources that we're going to need or don't even know that we have in our possession in this earth that he gifted us this paradise that doesn't make sense. From the depths of the sea to the depths of the universe, outside of the atmosphere, the cosmos, the galaxies. He made all of that for us to enjoy, but also to show us how big of a God he is. [00:13:48] And all he wants you to do, he's calling us to do, is just acknowledge who he is. [00:14:00] He is our Father. [00:14:06] You don't always go to your Father just when you want something. [00:14:11] It's a consistent pursuit of God. [00:14:14] Not when you want something you cuzzle up, you know, you cozy up. [00:14:19] It's like, what do you want? [00:14:22] You know, like, no, I really want to hang out with you. [00:14:26] And then when it's time, you can pull. But also, this is the reflection question that I need you to ask yourself. [00:14:34] Are you walking with God or are you watching what he's doing? [00:14:43] I'll say it again. Are you walking with God or are you watching what he's doing? [00:14:50] Okay, those are some very personal questions to ask because Enoch actually creates this best example for us. [00:15:01] He was close to God. [00:15:04] That was his claim to faith. [00:15:08] So if you haven't yet and you've been worshiping and thanking God for the things that he's done, that's great. [00:15:17] We need to praise God for what he's done. [00:15:19] But we also need to acknowledge just who he is to us. [00:15:24] That's the intimacy. That is the goodness, that is the mercy, that is the glory that God wants us to just sit in and acknowledge that how small we are and how big he is, how merciful he is, how gracious he has been, how often he has been blessing us and overwhelming us with good and awesome things that we have yet to even know about. There's good things ahead of us that we have yet to even wrap our minds around is because God is that good. [00:16:02] That's just who he is. [00:16:05] And I guarantee you, and I'm a close on this. I guarantee you your perspective of God will change depending on how close you are to Him. [00:16:20] That messed me up. [00:16:24] You will find how you will find how close you are to God if you happen to find, if you are unable to find, if you're able to find. Let me say this again. If you're able to find something negative that God's allowing or you feel like God's ignoring, that lets us know how close you have been to God. [00:16:47] Sometimes we tell on ourselves so my challenge to you, dear listener, find ways to get close to God. I guarantee it will change your language and your perspective of him. And just follow the example of Enoch and please God by believing who he is. All right, all right. Well, listen, if you've been blessed by this, I would be so thankful and grateful if you shared this podcast with Someone. We're on YouTube. We're on Spotify, we're on Apple Podcasts. I truly believe that as we are walking through the hall of Faith, that this will encourage, exhort, and build your faith to new levels. And until the next time, we'll catch you. Peace.
